Library Contract
At the beginning of each year a library contract is sent home with the students.
We are proud of our Library and want to keep it in good working order, we ask that you go over the following rules.
- Find a good place to keep your library book at home out of reach of small brothers and sisters.
- Have clean hands when handling books
- Handle books carefully
- Turn pages carefully
- Leave barcode label in place
- Use no pens, pencils, crayons, or marker pens on your book
- Remember to return your book to school on or before the following week or you will not be able to check out another book.
- Lost or damaged books will be charged to you
- You may bring the book back on or before your library day and put it in the library box in your classroom.
Book Checkout
At Ottomon we love to check out books! The students get to come into the library once a week with their class. We start our time together with me, (Miss Terri) sharing a read aloud. After the read aloud students may check out library books. Our TK-2nd grades check out one book a week. 3rd through 5th grades get to check out 2. If you do not return a book you can't check another one out until it is returned.
Books can be renewed if needed. Books can also be put on hold by telling me which book you would like to read next (this is done when a book is currently checked out by another student).
If a book is lost or damaged it must be replaced. A fine will be issued, and it can be paid by cash or check. You can also purchase the book your self and bring it to the library. If these things are done the fine is taken off the studrent's account. Please note, if a fine is not paid, it stays on the student's file. It must be paid before graduation from high school.
Remember to take care of your library book so other friends can enjoy it too!
Book Check In
Return you library books to the library bin. There is usually a basket in your classroom. If you are the classroom librarian you can bring all of the books into the library and feed them to my hungry dinosaur. He loves books and so do I! I will get the books out of the bin and check them in! You are welcome to return your books anytime! Thank you.
Book Suggestions
Do you have a favorite series or a favorite book that we don't have in the library yet and you would love to read it or share it with your friends? Well, put a suggestion into the Tardis and I will look into it. If the book would be something for our collection I will add it after our next book fair.
Read-Alouds
When the students come into the library they first hear a story. With the older students I read chapter books.
This year I am reading the One and Only Ivan (by Christina Applegate) to the 3rd and 4th graders. This story is inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, and is told by the point of view of Ivan himself.
The 5th graders are listening to Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea. This story is told through the eyes of seven 5th grade students. It is about one year in the life of a fifth-grader.
For the TK-2nd grade classes I read differnt picture books. I choose from authors we are celebrating as well as the special heritage month authors. I love reading with and to the kids and they all seem to enjoy it too. Ask them what we read this week and see what their favoite part was!
Events
March Author Visits
In Celebration of Read Across America we had 2 author visits.
On Monday March 4th Micheal Gallowglas, (our student Megan's dad) came to talk to the 4th and 5th grade classes about writing. He is an author and has been writing since he was in thrid grade! The students had a writing exercise and Mr. Gallowglas talked about being an author. It was an awesome experience for all!
On March 11th TK-3rd grade enjoyed a visit from author Crystel Patterson. Crystel read her book to the class and then had a wonderful interactive discussion afterward. Crystel was engaging and fun was had by all!
Visit her website at: https://crystelpatterson.com/collections/books.
You can still order the books you want! Crystel will autograph them for you. Please use Ottomon so that the shipping charge will be removed. Also please use the note section with your students name so the authograph can be personalized. The books will be broght to the school and delivered to your students classroom.
